Marvel Comics is making Thor a woman. From Time Magazine:
TIME: How do you think this will impact fans who have been with the male version of Thor for such a long time?
Jason Aaron, writer of the Thor series: If you’re a long-time Thor fan you know there’s kind of a tradition from time to time of somebody else picking up that hammer. Beta Ray Bill was a horse-faced alien guy who picked up the hammer. At one point Thor was a frog. So I think if we can accept Thor as a frog and a horse-faced alien, we should be able to accept a woman being able to pick up that hammer and wield it for a while, which surprisingly we’ve never really seen before.
WELL DONE, MARVEL! I’m saddened that they have to explain why they’re making Thor a woman, though. It’s not like they’d have to explain the existence of a male character.
If they were just like, “Ms. Marvel is a dude now,” I wouldn’t mind or anything, but I’d definitely want some explaining. (Obviously changing a feminist icon to a guy is irksome, but I need an example.)
Same goes here. I’m assuming they’ll kill old Thor, then have a new origin story where above Asgardian women named Thor picks up the hammer, and then everyone is like, okay, cool, join our team. Death of Captain America seems to be the route they’ll take.
I can only hope they actually stick to it longer that they did with Bucky, because if this gets changed back, that’s mad gimmicky.
